Relaxed Retreat At Carolina King Fishing Resort & Marina

Lake Marion, Summerton, SC

Rewind the calendar about 40 years.  Back to a time when the pace was a little slower, less hectic, less commercialized, less complicated.  Think back to the places where you went just to relax and enjoy being closer to Mother Nature, and good friends around a campfire.  Maybe you did a little fishing, or a casual boat ride on calm waters.  Or maybe you did absolutely nothing at all.  It was your time…and for a few days, time stood still.  All was right with the world.

Today, there are just a few places that still offer that casual, down-home, laid-back feel.  Sure, plenty of destinations ‘say’ that’s what you’ll find, but only a scarce few actually deliver on their promise.

One destination that absolutely fits the mold lies on the banks of Lake Marion near Summerton, South Carolina.  And its name describes it perfectly…Relaxed Retreat at Carolina King.

When you enter the property, you get the Old School feel of a true fish camp.  Several dozen quaint red cottages line the drive, most with a view of the lake.  Front decks and screened porches with wooden swings immediately signal this is a place to relax, to slow down and enjoy a respite from the chaos of work schedules and the internet…although they do have WiFi there.

Cabins come in a variety of configurations from cozy single bedroom units to larger units that can accommodate up to 12 people.  Each has its own unique character, and comes with a kitchen or kitchenette, HVAC, TV, and living area.  The interior finish is also reminiscent of a by-gone era and craftsmanship.  Pine or paneled walls, wildlife mounts on the walls, and décor that matches the laid-back lifestyle.  There’s also a number of RV sites, if you prefer to bring your home-away-from-home with you.

The general store has all the necessities you need for your stay.  Fresh-made biscuits in the morning.  Wings and pizza for a quick bite after a long day on the water.  There’s a full tackle shop and fuel at the dock.  The boat launch is free to guests, and they have rental boats and kayaks as well.

Lake Marion is famous for its natural beauty, and fishing.  Bluegill, crappie, bass and catfish all call this reservoir home.  Acres and acres of cypress swamp and channels create a perfect habitat for birds, fish,….and yes…gators.  But that’s the Low Country, and it’s amazing.

A short drive from the resort, and you’ll find great dining opportunities, golf, and cool places to visit, like the Francis Marion National Forest, the Palmetto Trail, and Santee State Park.

Relaxed Retreat is rustic.  It’s off the beaten path.  It’s quaint.  And it’s a wonderful place to step away from the hustle-bustle, and let the world pass you by.
